When he got home there was no sign of Josh, so Will changed into jeans and a T-shirt then started cooking a couple of steaks for their dinner. When his lover still hadn’t arrived an hour later, Will texted him but never heard back.

Eventually at seven p.m. Josh showed up, but he didn’t look happy.

“Hey.” Will tried to act normally. “I fixed dinner.”

“Not hungry.” Josh went straight through to the bedroom.

Will followed, watching him change into his own jeans. Before Josh slipped his shirt on, Will ran a hand over his bare back. “I know we need to talk, but maybe you’d rather not talk first?” He leaned in and planted a kiss on Josh’s shoulder.

His partner pulled away and donned his shirt. “I’m going out.” He shoved his wallet and keys into his jeans pockets.

“Okay, but we do need to talk. I need to explain what happened today.”

Josh shook his head, refusing to make eye contact. “Nothing to explain. You’re ashamed of me, and you don’t want anyone to know about us. I get it.”

Will’s jaw fell slack. “That’s not it at all! I’m sorry if I made you feel that way.”

Finally making eye contact, Josh appeared despondent. “You made me feel that way and worse. Hell, you and that other cop acted like I was the suspect you’re after.”

“Of course you’re not. We’re just following up every lead we’ve got. I nearly shit when Dix found your card in that guy’s apartment. You told me you were starting to check out meetings. You never said anything about getting friendly with other attendees.”

“By ‘getting friendly’ I assume you mean offering to listen to lonely people who have no one else to confide in?”

“How do you know that?” Will’s voice inched up an octave. “You’re such a sucker sometimes. Someone is preying on individuals exactly like you, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Josh scowled. “I’m pretty sure I can defend myself.”

“Yeah, until the guy pulls a knife or a gun or a garrote, for Christ’s sake. You could be robbed, assaulted or worse.”

Josh rose to his full height, towering over Will by several inches. “Do you realize how big a person would have to be to attack me?”

“Not that big, as long as he was a good shot. I’m serious, Joshua. Some of the people you try to help are probably very good people. Some of them are just assholes. You’re such a Good Samaritan. I’m not sure you’d know the difference.”

“You’re right. I thought I was a better judge of character than I turned out to be. I believed you when you said I meant something to you and that you loved me.”

The shot stung Will harder than any bullet. “That’s not fair. Okay, so maybe I’m a coward. I talked a big game about not hiding the fact that I’m gay from my coworkers, but when it came right down to it, I panicked.”

“Two of them are gay!” Josh’s voice oozed disbelief.
